Twilight Graphic Novel Review

So I picked up a copy of the Twilight Graphic novel today like the good little Twilightaholic I am. I thought I'd really enjoy it, but to be honest I really wasn't feeling it. Maybe those whose comic book tastes include more than just many many Archie comics read as a child will have a better appreciation for it, but I wasn't into it. I know in a graphic novel the story is bound to seem a bit choppy but that annoyed me none the less.

The main thing that annoyed me was the illustrations themselves. I don't like that some characters seemed to have been drawn with more inspiration from the actors playing their characters in the movies, while others didn't look a thing like the actors. Either do it or don't do it I think. Furthermore, I don't think the characters that were supposedly created based on the descriptions of the characters in the actual books looked right. In fact a lot of them looked so similar to eachother that I couldn't tell if it was Edward or Jasper or Carlisle I was looking at half the time, and Bella looked a lot like some of the other females as well aside from her hair. I think more emphasis should have been put on the details that Stephanie mentions frequently in the novels. Bella's mouth for example, she's always going on about her top lip being slightly fuller than her bottom lip. The always mentioned infamous Edward Cullen crooked smile...Robert Pattinson seems to have it down naturally, but I didn't see any sign of it once. Charlie just seems like she decided to draw a Ken doll. He looks nothing like the actor who plays him in the movie, and he looks nothing like Stephanie's description of him in the books. Esme looks like she should be in high school with Bella....and also is one of the girls who looks a lot like the Bella character.

I dunno, I think they would have been better off just drawing them based on the actors that have brought them to life. The Robert Pattinson comic version alone would have driven up sales even higher than they already are. I'll purchase the others for collection sake, but doubt I'll bother to read them.

SOOO CREEPY

I have not the words for how much this creeped me out...

Funny Twilight Pic Of The Day

Awww Jackson Rathbone

I love Jackson Rathbone...whoever did the casting for Twilight, man they picked some of the most charming men on the planet I swear. It seems like they all have the full package, looks, sense of humor, and modesty. LOVE EM.

From an interview with FEARnet:

Were there any particularly funny moments you had while filming Eclipse?

"You know, whenever you get into these fight scenes it gets a little funny because you’re going after each other, and we’ve all been such good friends for three years now, so throwing a punch at your friend is kind of weird. Jasper has to train the Cullen family, so it was weird… I didn’t want to throw punches at Nikki Reed or Ashley [Greene]! It just didn’t feel right to me to hit a girl. I was raised very Southern, and that’s very wrong where I come from."

Parody Of The Day

Stephen King vs. Stephanie Meyer

If anyone other than myself actually reads this, I'm sure I'll be all kinds of hated on, but that's ok. Obviously I love the Twilight books, or else I wouldn't have a blog dedicated to all things Twilight. Most Twilight related blogs I've seen are dedicated to simply worshiping all things Twilight without question, remaining impartial and in general just providing breaking news related to the Twilight universe. I like the idea that mine has more of a personal touch. My blog = my opinions. We're all welcome to them.

Now before I was a Twilight fanatic, long before, I was a Stephen King fanatic. I've been collecting his books since I was 15 years old, own over 130 copies of them, and even once decorated my bedroom in a theme based on his "Dark Tower" series. So when I heard that the first author whose work spawned an obsession for me was talking smack about the second, my first thought was, "No Stephen, no, don't do this to me!" Then I looked into what exactly went down.

Here is what Stephen had to say on Stephanie and the Twilight series being compared to the work of J.K. Rowling (who I am not a fan of):

"Both Rowling and Meyer, they're speaking directly to young people... The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can't write worth a darn. She's not very good.

People are attracted by the stories, by the pace and in the case of Stephenie Meyer, it's very clear that she's writing to a whole generation of girls and opening up kind of a safe joining of love and sex in those books. It's exciting and it's thrilling and it's not particularly threatening because it's not overtly sexual.

A lot of the physical side of it is conveyed in things like the vampire will touch her forearm or run a hand over skin, and she just flushes all hot and cold. And for girls, that's a shorthand for all the feelings that they're not ready to deal with yet."

To me, this is a case of the media and the Twihard community completely overreacting. Here's the thing, I have read the entire Twilight saga and listened to the audio books to the point where I have a lot of it memorized. However, I would never say that Stephanie Meyer is a genius WRITER. I think she's an amazing story teller, and the story she created is one that has captured the hearts of millions of people across the world. However King's comments are on her actual writing skills. Having read his book, "On Writing" which is about the art of writing I get what he's trying to say. There's nothing brilliant about Stephanie's actual technical writing skill. It's very basic, she repeats herself a LOT and at times could really use a thesaurus. Quite frankly I'm getting sick of reading about Edward's crooked smile, liquid topaz eyes, and her use of the words chagrin, wry, and hedged.

So yeah, people need to chill out. King himself once stated that when people accused him of pretty much writing smut, that the true mark of a talented author is in whether or not their books sell. His books sell. Stephanie's books sell. You can be a talented author without being a talented writer, in my oh so humble opinion.

Poor Kristen LOL

Parody Of The Day

This never gets old for me, "Check out my bazillion ab muscles" hahaha.

Wax Figure Analysis

I think they're a little harsh on it, but thought this was worth sharing anyway. I think it's mainly the squinted eyes that are a bit off, but I think they did a good job with it. To me it looks like they focused a little more on Rob's look as Edward Cullen than just Robert Pattinson.

Twilight Parody Of The Day

New Moon Extended Scenes

Think they should have left this in, as it was it didn't seem as though Alice was concerned about Bella's safety in Voltura, whereas in the books we know how much Alice loves Bella and that it was really hard on her to put her in that situation.

Wish they had have left this, it shows Caius' personality a little better.

I like how it shows more of Bella's emotion at returning to the meadow. Doesn't make much sense for her to say, "I was starting to think none of it was real" and then go on to act as though she still sees the Cullen's all the time though. Still don't get why Bella never tried to bargain with Laurant to make her a vampire. Funny at the end when he says "I don't believe it" and it shows the woods, but not the CGI wolf, so it's like, "I can't believe it either! FUCKING TREES!!!" Haha.

Ahhhh Carlisle's magic new accent. I like it, and they should have kept this whole scene. I'm all for any scenes that let us get to know the other Cullen's a little better.

I'm infuriated by this being cut. To me the "Well your friend just spent 2 weeks trying to find the perfect dream catcher" line is up there with the likes of the "Do you like apples? I just got her number, how do you like THEM apples?" line in Good Will Hunting. I don't know why it reminds me of that, it just does. Don't try to figure out how my mind works, we leave that to a highly skilled team of professionals hahaha.

New Moon Deleted Scenes

Ok, what do we have to say about part one here? First, a lot of these scenes I can't understand the need for them to be shot period, nevermind included on a DVD like we'd really want to see them. WHY did they delete the scene where Edward is driving Bella home after the party? It's the only time you really get to see his reaction to what happened other than the look on his face right afterwards, and then he just lies when he "breaks up with her". Seriously should have left it in. The bike crash? WTF is all I have to say. WHY? That's the most pointless thing I've ever seen. it's got nothing to do with anything.

Bella's nightmare? Where they all on shrooms when this was shot? The centipede typing an email? Edward's bizarre dialogue? I don't get it. I do however get why it was cut. Bella? Why on earth would you think a meadow would be a good place to drive motorcycles? Poor Mike Newton hahahaha. "I need a ride..." I wish they had have left the scene in with Victoria in the car. It was rather odd, but it just shows how much Rachelle Lafevre > Bryce Dallas Howard.

Kevin Smith on Twilight

Peter Facinelli: A Tale Of Two Doctors

Everyone should check out Peter Facinelli's other doctor role in Nurse Jackie aka "Carlisle Dyes His Hair". (Much in the same light as Remember Me aka Edward Dates a Blonde haha). The show is really entertaining, and Peter is awesome in it. I have two words about his character for you: "Sexual Tourette's". Oh yeah, it's a real thing, so funny. Check out these videos of "Dr. Coop's Video Diaries" for a look at what the show is all about, and how Peter Facinelli should just be renamed Dr. Awesome.

Charley Bewley = Adorable

So I recently discovered when viewing a few videos of Charlie Bewley aka Demetri of the Volturi, that he is absolutely adorable. Sort of reminds me of Eddie Izzard. Check him out:

Now you're gonna want to see the elevator scene (it's a little cut off, but you see what he's talking about):

FYI

I'm going to use this blog to just embrace my Twilight nerdiness in all it's glory. I'm working on putting up all the videos recently released from the New Moon DVD extras and the Eclipse stuff. I want to include my snarky comments with all of it so it'll be a bit of a process. I'm also going to use this to randomly rant about Twilight related things, and plan to post lots of funny videos and interesting interviews and such that I come across as well. Twilight is my little escape from the real world chill out and relax method so keep checking back often for my little indulgences.

Eclipse Sneak Peak + Exclusive Scene

Thoughts?

Everything looks like it's going to be awesome for the most part. Still hate hate hate Victoria but that's nothing new. Rachelle Lafevere WAS Victoria, can't believe they replaced here. Gay move Summit, super gay.

Carlisle's mysterious accent that I first noticed in the New Moon extended scenes extra is back, what's up with that? I like it, I think he SHOULD have an accent, just kind of weird that it's only really being shown now. I guess he didn't talk much before though, and maybe he tries to downplay it most of the time so he doesn't seem quite as worldly, or otherworldly as he actually is.

LMAO @ Rob doing his fight training while wearing the infamous beanie. Wouldn't that get really warm?

Taylor having someone throw a grape to him from super far away, BACKFLIP as it's coming towards him, and then catch it in his mouth? Epic, I'm impressed.

Jasper looks fucking badass, love the hair. Finally answered the question that has always bothered me, if the vampires in Twilight were able to grow their hair. They dye it too by the looks of Esme.

As for the scene at the end? Two words: "Le Sigh."

First Eclipse Trailer

My thoughts?

Not a fan, but they did make up for it with the behind the scenes thing they released with the New Moon DVD. Overall I think everyone kind of sounds like they're on Ludes, Bella's wig looks ridiculous in a few places, the new Victoria is an abomination, and it wouldn't have killed them to give us one decent action shot involving the newborn vampires / the huge fight.

Rob looks a little less skinny, maybe the fight training did him some good. I also get a kick out of watching him walk across the screen in that shot by himself because it's one of the few times that I've seen Robert Pattinson not look like he might be about to trip over his own feet at any moment haha.

Dakota sounds horrible in the clip they show, like baaaad acting. Did they need to recycle Caius's line from New Moon? Gay, give her some original dialogue.

STUPID AS HELL that they get all dramatic with Bella saying, "Victoria found us." Victoria never fucking lost you! She knew where you were the whole time. Victoria is here might have worked better? Like if you read the books you know what she's actually referring to, but if you didn't it's just dumb.

Also I wish they didn't use the clips where Edward and Jacob are clearly talking about the alliance and the fight against the newborn army to seem like they're only talking about fighting over Bella.

Ok I got all that out of my system haha. (By the way I truly love all this shit, I just love criticizing it to death as well
).

How I Became "One Of Those People"

I feel I should take this moment to remind everyone that there was a time when I was not sickly obsessed with the Twilight books and Robert Pattinson, no we all have my dear friend Lizzie to thank for creating that monster. I can clearly remember being in Halifax when the Twilight hysteria first hit. I reacted to it the same way I did with Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Lord of the Rings. Thought everyone was losing their minds and avoided it on general principle of not becoming one of "those people".

Then I arrived in Fort McMurray, and Lizzie was in the full on obsession mode having just finished all 4 books. There's some kind of mind control thing involved where once you become obsessed, you feel the need to make everyone around you obsessed too. I wasn't having it for weeks. She kept trying to get me to read them or watch the movie and I refused and held my ground based on two things. First, I was in no mood to read a love story upon arriving here. I had just broken up with my fiance Gary who I was with for 8 years. Love could go fuck itself as far as I was concerned. Second, vampire books scare me and make me do crazy things like refuse to sleep without a cross on and a blessed virgin mary medal hanging on my doorknob (that's what happened when I read Salems Lot). I didn't realize at the time of course that they weren't scary vampires.

The Robert Pattinson obsession is equally baffling as before I saw Twilight I could not make any sense of how people thought he was attractive. I seriously thought he was ugly. Then I saw Twilight. Then I discovered he was British. Then I discovered how adorably self deprecating and modest he is, and I was done for. For those of you that still don't get it, these might help:

So eventually I gave in and watched the movie which I just thought was ok the first time around, but interested me enough to give the books a try. Then that was it, I never had a chance. HOOKED. To the point that by the third book I couldn't handle having to stop reading to do things like eat, shower, etc. So I downloaded the audio books and took my laptop in the bathroom with me when I showered haha. And as silly as it sounds to me even now, reading those books was what helped me finally realize I had to let Gary go, and us breaking up was a good thing. I know Edward seems kind of wussy in the movies to some people, but you really fall in love with the character of Edward Cullen when you read the books. Just reading about that devotion made me realize that while no one like him actually exists, I deserve to be with a guy who at least would never want to hurt me for the world. During the last year of our relationship Gary seemed to just be spending his time coming up with new and inventive ways to completely crush me and break my heart.

It's funny to me that reading those books was my first real step in moving on with my life. Sad and embarrassing too haha. My last night of work in Halifax is starting to seem kind of creepy in retrospect. I had just started working at this stupid laundromat directly across the street from the condo I was supposed to move into before Gary and I broke up. The girl I was working with was reading the last book, Breaking Dawn, and trying to sell me on it like every other Twilight obsessed person in the world. I humored her and let her go on and on about them, but never had any plans to read them even though she said she was going to lend me her copy of the first book. We spent most of the shift talking about the books. Well she did as I pretended to be interested haha. The other thing we talked about that night was her family. She told me how after 10 years of marriage, her uncle had recently come home to find almost everything in his house, including his wife, gone. He had no clue anything was even wrong. She never talked to him or told him she was going to leave, and he didn't hear from her after that until he got the divorce papers in the mail. Both sides of the family, his and hers, were baffled because he loved her to death and would have done anything for her, no one could understand why she'd leave him. I remember saying to her how horrible that would be, to find out your marriage was over by walking in to discover everything was gone.

So Gary picked me up after my shift was over that night, dropped me off at home, and I walked in to discover....all of his things were gone. No note, no nothing. He was gone. Seriously that is pretty trippy is it not? That's like one of those things that happens in a book or a movie, not in real life. You know, foreshadowing and all that.

So yeah, now I'm one of "those people" and I say the hell with it, everyone has something nerdy they enjoy, why bother being embarrassed and trying to hide it? My name is Cathy, and I'm a Twilightaholic.

Archive: Mama Said, Do You Know How To Make a Kitty Meeeeoooow?

If you actually understand that title than you're as sick and twisted as I am hahaha. I'm about to show my true blue dorkness in all it's glory.

Random reasons Robert Pattinson is awesome:

- He admits to getting confused while doing a lot of press and just start talking in an American accent without even realizing he's doing it.

- He seemed genuinely shocked when a fan asked him if the fact that every shirt he wears is always misbuttoned on purpose is true, he had no clue he was doing it. There are thousands of pictures of him doing it.

- He's genuinely baffled by why women are obsessed with him, he's got like the worst self esteem ever and always makes a point of saying self deprecating things about himself.

New things that piss me off about Twilight/New Moon:

- Bella totally doesn't understand how Edward can actually be interested in her and is always doubting the fact that he could really want to be with HER for like a long ass time. Yet never does the thought ever seem to occur to her that maybe he's not really into her, he's just amazed by the fact that he can't read her mind, and that it was just the novelty of having that that is making him want to be with her. Always thinks she's not pretty enough for him, but never once thinks hey maybe I'm just something different for him and that's what he's so obsessed with, not the actual person I am. NOT ONCE.

- In the book New Moon Jasper is not in high school with Edward and Alice during senior year. In the books it mentions once that Jasper and Rosalie are twins. Which would mean when the book says "the older scarier Cullens were away at college" that SHOULD HAVE included Jasper, but in fact the book just doesn't say anything about where Jasper is. It tells us Edward and Alice are at Forks High School Senior Year, and it tells us Emmitt and Rosalie aka the scarier Cullens are gone away to school together, but it doesn't say a word about that third "scarier Cullen" and where they are telling the town that HE is since he's not in high school. In the movie Jasper IS going to school with Alice and Edward still, making him Rosalies "little" brother instead. OH! And in the book they refer to them as Rosalie and Jasper Hale, according to their public story, they cousins of Esme's that the Cullens adopted, but in the movie they are Rosalie and Jasper Cullen, and it makes no mention of them pretending to be biological brother and sister.

- Why the fuck doesn't Bella try to convince Laurant into making her into a vampire when he wants to kill her? He would have said no because it would have pissed off Victoria, but still faced with Death you would think it would cross her mind to try let him feed from her if he'll make her a vampire, that way she can go be with Edward and be a vampire like she wants to be.

Now the one that's pissing me off the most:

- THEY DON'T ACTUALLY SAY A FUCKIN WORD ABOUT JASPERS MOOD CONTROL TALENT IN EITHER MOVIE, NOT IN TWILIGHT, NOT IN NEW MOON. This would be fine, except at the start of the movie where Bella simply says, "Jasper, no fair with the mood control thing". Would make NO SENSE to someone who didn't read the books. They would not jump to thinking "oh that must be Jasper's talent" with the way they present that in the movie. All it seems like is that Bella is probably trying to figure out what on earth made her say yes to the birthday party and she jokes that Jasper is somehow involved in a conspiracy to influence her mood, as a sarcastic joke. They also should have revealed the talents of the Volturi in a more noticeable way. OH, also they should have explained exactly what a "tracker" was in the first movie when Edward said James was one. It's clear that it makes him able to locate Bella from thousands of miles away which a normal vampire couldn't do. They can also find any one particular vampire they are looking for at any time they want. Normal vampires can only sense where humans and other vampires are if they are in the close vicinity of them.

Ok, I'm going to go find what's left of my dignity now.

Archive Post: New Moon Review

Today I decided I'll distract myself from less pleasant things by "reviewing" New Moon....well the crappy download I managed to find anyway, I'm sure I'll have more to add once I see it in all it's glory on Tuesday.

I have to warn you that Lizzie and I are very big on the books. I really can't tell you how many times I've read them since she finally managed to get me to read them back in April. However after I finished the second book, I was so hooked that it angered me to have to stop reading them long enough to eat or do anything that required me not being able to read at the same time. So I downloaded the audio books for the last two books, and since April I've pretty much been listening to them on rotation every single day. Sometimes I skip a few days after I finish the last book, but it's never long before I'm listening to them again. With the aide of the audio book format I'd guess I've probably read the series at least 15 times, probably more. So while we love the whole thing TOO MUCH probably, we're also very critical haha. We break out the Twilight movie now every once in a while and find new things to pick apart, we figure we should be brought in as expert consultants at this point. Ok you've been fairly warned, onto my thoughts on the movie.

I have to say I loved it. The best part of it to me is that unlike Twilight it's not a movie I feel I have to be embarrassed to like. The dialogue in Twilight was HORRIBLE. "HOW YOU LIKIN DA RAIN GURL???" for example. I'm still trying to make sense of the whole "Buttcrack Santa" "the kids really love those little bottles" conversation. They didn't talk like normal teenagers at all, and everyone in the movie that wasn't a vampire, or Bella said nothing but stupid shit. Well Jacob didn't sound like an idiot I guess, but the filler characters were soooo bad. So that brings me to point one....

1. Thank you people for putting some effort into writing the script and actually making some really funny moments in the movie to offset the heavy nature of the events in the movie. It's nice to see Edward actually having a sense of humor and in general the lighter moments of the movie were ACTUALLY funny. Bella giving Jasper shit for controlling her mood to get her to agree to the birthday party, JASPER being funny, Jessica's self centered bitchiness actually being comical, the whole movie outing with Jacob and Mike, the Wolf pack, the numerous "dog" related jokes/insults. It made it much more entertaining and I don't think I'll have to cringe while I watch it a million times hahaha.

2. Hard to tell on the copy I had, but the special effects of the speed of the vampires, the werewolves, and the sparkling of Edwards skin all seem to be really well done and MUCH better than they were in the first movie. I was surprised how well they did with the werewolves in particular.

3. I liked how they used Bella writing emails to Alice (that bounced) to carry along the narrative. It's good because it shows that even while her friendship with Jacob grows, her mind is still with Edward and the Cullens.

4. I liked how the painting of Carlisle with the Volturi came to life as Edward told Bella the story of them and Carlisle's time with them.

5. The whole thing seemed really fast to me, I'm not sure if it was because there was so much to try to fit into a 2 hour movie, or if it was the months of slow motion trailers hahaha.

6. I agree with what Robert Pattinson has said in interviews, that he wished they had have pushed it a little more to really show that Bella is essentially going crazy. She's not seeing a ghost of Edward, Edward isn't appearing to her as a vision in a supernatural sense, she is literally going mad. I guess to show the true nature of that would have been a little too depressing perhaps, but I think they could have pushed it a little more to show just how fucked up she really was and that it was driving her truly crazy. I wish they had better showed just how much of a mess she was at first especially. Yeah the screaming in the night and all that does it a bit, but I wish it had shown more of her at the very beginning where they were tossing around words like "catatonic". I don't think it showed her devastation after he initially left her well enough.

7. They left out things/changed a few things that really bugged me. I get they have to cut some stuff but some of it seems too important to leave out in my opinion. I don't like that Edward doesn't take her to school every morning, and secretly spends every night with her as well. That's their time to really be with eachother, away from everyone else, I thought it was pretty lame that they left it out and showed them arriving at school separately and Bella doesn't ask Edward to stay as he normally does after the disaster at the birthday party. I wish they had left in Carlisle telling Bella about Edward dying, his mother, and his reasons for changing him into a vampire as he stitched her up. I wish they had have shown Edward's behavior after the birthday party better. How he continues to do things as usual at first while acting strange and causing Bella to worry about the internal struggle he goes through before deciding to leave. When Bella stops him in Italy they should have left it as it was in the book where he's confused at first and thinks he's died and that's why he's seeing Bella. It plays a big part later because Bella is able to use it against him to say he must have some hope that there is an afterlife for their kind because that was the first conclusion he came to when saw her in the book, he said, "Amazing, Carlisle was right." His hesitation and her frantically trying to get him to realize that he wasn't dead, neither was she, and that he had to get out of the light would have made it more dramatic. Leaving the Volturi was too sudden, in the book they have to stay until nighfall before they can leave, and they skip over the whole way back to America, where Bella is still under the assumption that Edward doesn't want to be with her and that his relief is simply from knowing that he didn't cause her death. Her accepting so easily that he really did love her all along and only left because he was trying to protect her makes her easy acceptance of her not being good enough for him when he tells her he's leaving her look stupid. Either she doesn't think she's good enough for him so much that she would believe he would leave her, or she believes that she is everything to him and he couldn't possibly leave her unless it was simply him trying to protect her, the book balances that, the movie doesn't.

Ummm ok that's all I can think of for now haha, I'm sure there will be more. So glad that it was better than I thought it would be overall though, I was expecting that it wouldn't be able to live up to all the months of wait, it was totally worth the wait. My main thing is, if you like the movies, read the friggin books because you're missing out on so much if you limit yourself to what they are able to fit in a 2 hour movie.
